Biotechnology High School (BTHS) is an International Baccalaureate World School under the governance of the Monmouth County Vocational School District. BTHS offers a rigorous college preparatory curriculum with an emphasis on laboratory science, research, mathematics, and technology. Two 3000 square-foot research labs allow students to engage in long-term research projects, and a brand new tissue culture lab engages students in cutting edge laboratory work. Flexible meeting spaces promote teamwork, a hallmark of the biotechnology industry. Thematic classes focus on genetics, environmental, biomedical and agricultural biotechnology, along with BioEngineering and BioBusiness.
Universities worldwide recognize IB as a rigorous high school program that graduates students who are uniquely prepared to succeed at college. Students who graduate from IB programs are recognized for their ability to think critically and globally on a wide range of topics. These students can also be eligible for up to one year’s worth of college credits depending on the school they choose to attend and the major they select. BTHS is the only high school in NJ at which 100% of the students are IB Diploma Candidates.
A close-knit learning community of approximately 320 students, BTHS graduated its first class in the spring of 2009. Courses are taught in eighty-five-minute blocks by a faculty prepared with outstanding academic credentials and industry experience. They use the block schedule to deliver creative lessons that tightly link student-learning objectives with hands-on activities. Classroom learning is extended through the use of technology, guest speakers, and field trips. The one-hour lunch/activity period in the middle of the day permits all students to be involved in the wide range of clubs and activities at BTHS. It also provides time for students to work individually with teachers, to collaborate on group projects, or to socialize. An active Parent-Student-Faculty Association (PSFA) provides the school with financial support for co-curricular programs, hospitality for community events, teacher grants, and student scholarships. BTHS benefits greatly from the close involvement of its Advisory Board members. With members from both industry and higher education, the Advisory Board works closely with staff on curriculum development, equipment selection, and in the procurement of grants and student internships. BTHS is proud to be a part of the pipeline for this exciting and rapidly growing industry.
