Supermarket Careers is a program designed to train and place students interested in jobs in the food marketing industry. Together, Shop-Rite/Wakefern Food Corp, and Monmouth County Vocational School District (MCVSD) have created a partnership to meet the goals of developing a permanent work force. The MCVSD offers students the opportunity to apply for a Job mentorship where they can work in the food industry while still earning high school credits for graduation. This requires a coordinated effort between the school and the communities that it serves. This program provides the student with a basic understanding of retail marketing. It serves to enable students the opportunity for an entry-level position in a variety of retail-based work situations.
Supermarket Careers activities, lessons, and certifications include:
ServSafe – Nationally recognized food safety program
Produce Marketing Association (PMA) – produce recognition and proper handling techniques
Running a real Shop-Rite store in the school
Operating a deli, produce case, and food court
Operating an IBM cash register – proper money handling
Learning proper customer service etiquette
Ordering, receiving, storing and displaying merchandise for sale
